IPS e-max (Lithium Disillicate) - is the newest porcelain capable of being bonded to a tooth and is much stronger than other porcelains, approxamatly twice as strong, therefore more resistant to chipping. This is an excellent choice for severe bruxers and grinders. Currently manufactures are creating more natural colors to be meet the demands of esthetics in the anterior region, “The Smile Zone”. Operators may choose the suitable all-ceramic material in accordance with the indication and the required strength. For all single-tooth restorations in the anterior and posterior region, lithium disilicate (LS2) is the material of choice for highly esthetic results. For larger restorations, such as posterior bridges that are subject to high masticatory stress, restorations supported with the IPS e.max ZirCAD zirconium oxide ceramic are indicated. In combination with lithium disilicate (LS2), the innovative IPS e.max CAD-on technique now also permits the fabrication of up to 4-unit posterior bridges with outstanding overall strength and highly esthetic appearance.

The material is used in the dental laboratory in conjunction with either the press or the CAD/CAM technology. Given the high strength of 360-400 MPa, the restorations offer flexible cementation options. Depending on the patient situation, the restorations may be veneered in a highly esthetic manner or, if fabricated as monolithic restorations, stained.

Even if the preparations demonstrate a dark shade (e.g. as a result of discolouration or titanium abutments), all-ceramic restorations may be fabricated. Inform your laboratory about the die shade and the dental technicians then selects the IPS e.max lithium disilicate material in the required opacity in order to redesign the true-to-nature esthetic appearance.

Careful preparation is decisive for the accuracy of fit and durability of the restoration.

Precise marginal design with a circular shoulder or a chamfer preparation with rounded inner edges is important. Avoid sharp transitions and feather edges. Adhesive cementation permits defect-oriented preparation.

In order to achieve sufficiently strong restorations, the minimum thicknesses have to be observed. With the IPS e.max system, the recommended areas of indication, preparation recommendations and connector strength values for the material used (LS2 or ZrO2) have to be observed.
